Okay, so today we're going to talk about an interesting grammar lesson that I learned in my Korean 101 language class, and that's the use of "and" in sentences. One of the most commonly used words, so let's learn!
하고 - 와/과 - 랑/이랑 are 3 different conjunctions that basically connect two nouns together. However, there are slight differences between them
- 하고
When we say 하고 , we are indicating no real relationship between things. You are simply listing things.
- 술하고 물
- 과/와
This can also sometimes mean "with". Generally, it is a little more specific than than 하고 because it indicates a relationship between the items you are listing. In addition, 과/와 is commonly used in writing.
Use 과 when final word stem ends in a consonant
Use 와 when final word stem ends in no consonant
ex. 밥과 모짜렐라치즈
- 랑/이랑
More commonly used when people speak. Commonly used in dining establishments when ordering off the menu. Much like 과/와, 랑/이랑 indicates a relationship between things
ex. 김밥이랑 떡뽁이
So there you have it. After today's class, I felt a lot more comfortable using the Korean version of "and" and "with" in confidence. It was a little confusing at first because it's so different from English, but I gotta stick with it! How far along are you in your own Korean language studies?
